Why We Calculated PROMAR’s Carbon Footprint?
Before you can meaningfully change anything, you first need to understand what truly requires change. This is why we decided to calculate PROMAR’s carbon footprint — not because we were obliged to (we aren’t), but because we want to understand where our emissions originate and which areas demand our attention. Awareness is the first step, and without it, informed decisions simply aren’t possible.
As part of this process, the WIFOR Institute from Germany calculated PROMAR’s full carbon footprint, covering all three scopes: scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3.
For clarity:
- Scope 1 – direct emissions generated within the company (e.g., fuel, boilers)
- Scope 2 – emissions resulting from purchased energy (e.g., electricity, heat)
- Scope 3 – emissions across the entire value chain, both upstream and downstream
This is the first calculation of such scope and depth in PROMAR’s history, giving us a comprehensive view of our total emissions.
The results are:
- Scope 1: 0.11%
- Scope 2: 5.09%
- Scope 3: 94.80%
As expected, the vast majority of emissions lie within Scope 3 — the extended value chain. What’s especially significant is that nearly 90% of Scope 3 emissions come from category 3.1 – Purchased Goods and Services, meaning raw materials, products, and services we procure.

Where We Have Influence — and Where the Challenges Begin?
The carbon footprint analysis shows that our strongest ability to influence emissions lies within PROMAR itself and across our Tier-1 suppliers.
PROMAR accounts for 5.2% of total emissions, while Tier-1 suppliers generate 18.2% — and this is precisely where we can act most effectively.
Further down the chain, the contribution increases:
- Tier-2 – suppliers of our suppliers (34.5%)
- Tier-3 – deeper levels of the value chain (42.1%)
Tier-3 is the area we influence the least — and therefore, it represents the biggest challenge for future emission reduction actions.

Awareness Is the Starting Point
Today’s calculations give us a clear picture of where PROMAR’s emissions truly arise and where our actions can be most effective. This is our starting point — not a declaration of a perfect world, but a concrete roadmap showing where we can gradually implement changes in areas under our real influence.
Calculating our carbon footprint is not a goal in itself.
It is a tool — one that helps us make better decisions.
And the first step toward change is always understanding.
